Obituary of Bernice Komarow Feldman

Bernice K. Feldman, a resident of Briarcliff Manor, New York, for more than 50 years, passed away  on January 6 in Grapevine, Texas.  She was 94.

A graduate of Hunter College, Columbia University and New York University, Dr. Feldman specialized in speech pathology and rehabilitation, serving as a speech therapist, pathologist and teacher at numerous health and education institutions, including the Dobbs Ferry School System, Lehman College, the College of New Rochelle, Mercy College, Westchester Community College, Phelps Memorial Hospital and the Mount St. Ursula Speech Center.  She was a past president of the Westchester Speech, Hearing and Language Association and served as a consultant to IBM.  Dr. Feldman also maintained private practice, The Speech/Language Path, in Briarcliff.

She was born Bernice Natallie Komarow on December 7, 1923 in New York City to Benjamin Komarow, an attorney, and the former Shirley Rappaport.  During World War II, she enlisted and served as an officer in the Navy WAVES.  A devoted supporter of Eleanor Roosevelt and Adlai Stevenson, Dr. Feldman was an active member of the League of Women Voters since the 1950s.

She is survived by four children, Lynne Katz and partner Ed Nelson , Lee Feldman and spouse Margaret Peters, Nance Elmore, and Elizabeth Feldman Brandt and partner Karen Razzano, eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.  Leonard Feldman, her husband of 63 years, died in 2007.

She was a woman ahead of her time who served in the military, raised four children while completing her masters and doctorate degrees, mentored numerous students and could make conversation with anyone about anything.

A memorial service is being planned for February.

Her immediate surviving family includes grandchildren Amanda and Andrew Brandt; Brittany and Branson Hutchens ; Adam and Melinda Katz, Brian and Tiffany Katz;  Anne and Beth Peters; Jane Mossa; and great-grandchildren Hayden, Landon and Leah Hutchens; Josh, Rachel and Zoey Katz; Ali, Justin, Toby and Sadie Mossa; Kira Christensen and Liliana Hook.   Extended family and dear friends include Alan Adler, Edie Bogoff, Terri Rogaway, Melanie Linza, Craig Adler, Denia Katz Perloff, Lillian and Meg Miller, Stuart and Myra Macnofsky, Tina Komarow Skojec and Gary Komarow, David and Laurie Albert.
